The channel was originally known as the Pat Robertson International Family Entertainment Channel until being sold to News Corporation in 1989 and eventually becoming the Family Channel in 1991. The channel had historically been the main Canadian outlet for programming from the American Disney Channel and its spin-off channels Disney Junior and Disney XD. It has also co-produced a number of made-for-television films, including the 2010 film 16 Wishes.
